The Importance of Coolant System Repair

Expert Tips & Tricks to Manage Your Cooling System

You may not always feel it, but the cooling system in your vehicle is constantly working to try and regulate the temperature of your engine. Vehicle overheating is a common problem that occurs when there is a lapse in your cooling system. In addition to your radiator, your cooling system also includes other components that work together to keep your engine from overheating, including the water pump and thermostat.

To help better understand how your cooling system works and what you can do to help monitor any problems, the experts at Bailey's CDJR have come together to highlight the importance of coolant system repair. We'll cover the common signs that indicate you need a coolant flush, what each component does, and how it works to try and keep your engine at normal operating temperature.

Cooling System Components

Radiator

The radiator in your car is one of the main components that help regulate your cooling system. To care for radiator, it's best to make sure that it's always topped off with the proper coolant level. Running low on coolant will cause your radiator to overheat. Regular coolant flushes will also help maintain the lifespan of your radiator, as flushing the system will eliminate any build-up or residue that may have been clogging your cooling veins.

Several signs indicate that your radiator might need to be replaced, including steam billowing from beneath the hood. Escaping steam coming from inside your engine bay while you're driving is a clear sign that your vehicle is overheating and that the radiator isn't working as it's supposed to. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge also, as this will give you a visual aid when diagnosing any problems with your radiator.

Water Pump

As its name suggests, the water pump helps keep the engine cool by pumping a mixture of water and coolant through the system. You'll notice that most coolant fluids are diluted 50% with water, which is why the water pump is such a pivotal piece of the cooling puzzle. The water pump works directly to your radiator and temperature gauge via a pulley connected to your serpentine belt.

Common signs of water pump failure include a loud grinding noise coming from your engine. It might be a bad bearing or a bad seal, but a bad water pump's auditory sounds are very easy to recognize. To confirm the water pump is actually bad, check the temperature gauge on your dash and look underneath the vehicle itself to see if any water is leaking below the engine while the car is running.

Thermostat

Just like at home, the thermostat in your car helps regulate the temperature of your engine as the coolant passes through the radiator into the cooling veins. The thermostat is usually located somewhere between the radiator and the engine, indicated by a small coil-spring mechanism. When the system detects that the temperature is too high or too low, the imbalance will trigger the thermostat and usually throw a code or check engine light.
