Every now and then, it's not bad to have a little bit of healthy dissent. At least, that's what the Jeep brand believes when it comes to their new trail hawk, the 2014 Cherokee. Since its design was unveiled last year, it's had a lot of people up in arms--both in good ways, and not so good.

The design is actually the heart of the controversy. When the Cherokee left the brand's lineup in 2001 in favor of the Liberty, it bore the classic rough-edged Jeep brand countenance. The 2014 iteration, however, departs that entirely, with narrow, wedge-like headlights that give the SUV a snake-like presentation, and a streamlined look.

This new face for the storied SUV has drawn much ire from critics, and the Chrysler Group is loving it. Their intention with creating the new Cherokee--similar to how it did with the original in 1974--was to create a love-it or hate-it design with the traditional off-road underpinnings left intact.

And off-roading chops it has in spades. The Trailhawk trim in particular, fitted with the brand's first ever nine speed transmission, has been turning heads with its capabilities both on road, and off. Don't get us wrong, it's no Wrangler, but you'd still be surprised to see what this SUV can do.
